This amazing Empress ruled Russia for decades, and she had an incredible eye for beautiful design. She filled her gorgeous palaces with the most brilliant and expensive furniture the world had ever seen. You will be amazed by the sheer scale and beauty of her personal collection.

A True Royal Passion

Catherine the Great furniture was absolutely obsessed with beautiful interiors. When she came to power, she decided her palaces needed a massive and exciting makeover. She hired the most famous French and German cabinetmakers to craft special pieces just for her.

You will notice quickly that her furniture is anything but boring or plain. It is dripping with gorgeous golden bronze mounts and features the absolute finest woods available. The craftsmanship had to be absolutely perfect, or she would simply send the pieces right back to the maker.

Crossing The Wide Ocean

Now, let us talk about the big question on your mind. How exactly did all this precious royal furniture end up in the United States? It is actually a very fascinating and slightly sad historical story. After the Russian Revolution in the early twentieth century, the new government took over all the royal palaces.

The Soviet government suddenly needed money very badly to fund their new country. To raise this cash, they decided to sell off enormous amounts of royal treasures. They held massive sales and auctions, inviting wealthy collectors from all over the world to buy these goods.

Exploring Washington DC Treasures

If you want to see the most spectacular collection of Catherine the Great furniture, you must visit Washington DC. This beautiful city is home to the Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Gardens. I absolutely cannot recommend this wonderful place enough!

It was once the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, who was an incredibly wealthy American businesswoman. Marjorie lived in Russia for a short time during the nineteen thirties because her husband was a diplomat. While she was there, she fell completely in love with Russian royal art.

The Magic Of Roentgen

You simply cannot talk about this furniture without talking more about David Roentgen. He was essentially the ultimate celebrity furniture maker of his entire era. Catherine the Great thought his work was pure genius, and I am sure you will agree with me when you see it!

His pieces are famous for their incredibly detailed wood inlay work, known as marquetry. He would take tiny pieces of different colored woods and create pictures right on the surface of the furniture. It looks exactly like a painting, but it is made entirely of smooth wood!

New York City Finds

Washington DC is not the only place holding these wonderful royal treasures. You can also find breathtaking pieces right in New York City! The Metropolitan Museum of Art, known affectionately as the Met, has some incredible items connected to the Empress.

You can easily spend an entire day just wandering through their massive European furniture galleries. The Met holds several exquisite chairs and smaller pieces that were originally created for Catherine’s personal rooms. The museum curators have done a fantastic job explaining the history behind each stunning piece.

Finding The Royal Marks

How exactly do experts know that a piece of furniture actually belonged to Catherine the Great? It is an exciting process, almost like solving a thrilling royal mystery! Many pieces of her furniture are stamped with specific inventory marks straight from the palaces.

These authentic marks usually include specific letters and numbers painted directly onto the bottom or the back of the furniture. Sometimes, you will even see her personal royal monogram worked directly into the visible design. Her monogram usually features a beautiful, sweeping letter E, because her name in Russian was Ekaterina.

Decorating Your Own Castle

You are probably wondering how you can bring some of this royal magic into your own living room. Buying an original piece of Catherine the Great furniture is practically impossible, unless you have millions of dollars! However, you can absolutely find gorgeous antique reproductions across the USA.

Many high-end antique dealers specialize in gorgeous nineteenth-century copies of these famous royal designs. When you are shopping at antique stores, you want to look for very specific royal details. Search for dark mahogany wood combined with bright brass or bronze metallic decorations.

Start Your Museum Adventure

Are you feeling as excited as I am about these gorgeous royal treasures? I highly recommend planning a fun weekend trip to see them with your own eyes! Photographs simply do not do justice to the shiny gold, the rich woods, and the incredible scale of these pieces.

You really need to stand right next to them to appreciate the true genius of the masterful craftsmanship. If you decide to visit Hillwood Estate or the Metropolitan Museum, definitely grab a helpful audio guide. The true stories behind each specific piece of furniture are absolutely fascinating.
